Khlong Lat Mayom is one of three floating markets located near Bangkok, less than 20 kilometers from the city center. It is easily accessible by taxi from Wongwian Yai, the last BTS station on the Silom Line. Khlong Lat Mayom is different from other popular tourist destinations like Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa. It has the charm and authenticity of a local market, and you may be one of the only foreigners around. You can spend a couple of hours here, and then move to the largest Taling Chan floating market, just a few kilometers away.
People from all over the world enjoy floating markets. Eating out in Thailand is not as formal as it is in Western culture. It is cheap, fun, casual, and very Thai. The food is so diverse that it will leave you amazed! The definition of a "floating market" is a bit stretched for Khlong Lat Mayom. It is more of a riverside market. The canal here is very narrow, and only a few boats are parked alongside the riverbank and below a low bridge. These boats have live cooking for the customers, who usually sit at low tables all along the water.
The main highlight of the floating markets is the food! While sitting on a small wooden stool barely higher than 10 centimeters, you can order dishes cooked on a tiny wooden boat anchored just next to your table. It is such a fun and exotic experience! Don't be shy and try some of the dishes you are unfamiliar with. If you don't know what it is, just point at your neighbor's plate. Noodle soups, Pad Thai, Kanom Jeen (cold rice vermicelli), or Hoi Tod (oyster omelet) are all around 20 to 30 baht per plate. Drinks are usually sold by another person walking around. Hope you enjoy your visit to Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market!
